Clickable Calls & Clearer Crime Definitions
2025-04-23
“Transparency isn’t just about showing data — it’s about making it understandable.”
Why This Update Matters
A lot of residents told me they loved seeing the real‑time 911 map, but many still had questions:
- What exactly does a “Priority 1” call mean?
- Where can I drill into a specific incident?
- Who decides these crime labels, anyway?
Turns out the official terminology is complex — and sometimes outdated. So I reached out to the Detroit Criminal Intelligence Bureau (DCIB) to get authoritative definitions and refresh the platform.
What’s coming down the pipe
Feature | What it does | Why it helps |
---|---|---|
Clickable calls of interest | Tap any icon on the map to open a side‑panel with timestamp, address block, call type, and response status. | No more guessing what a dot means — context is one click away. |
Authoritative crime definitions | Every category now links to the DCIB definition pop‑up. | Residents, journalists, and activists speak the same language as dispatch. |
Mobile‑first map controls | Pinch‑zoom & long‑press to inspect on phones. | Accessibility for users on the go. |
Call for Collaboration
This is a side project I work on in my spare time to I'm open to collaboration. Also remember that this app is a work in progress however, I like to release my features in iterations to get live feedback from awesome users like yourself.
If you’re a:
- Resident who needs better safety insight
- Journalist looking to contextualize dispatch trends
- Developer eager to build civic tech
…reach out. Accurate, actionable data only happens when the community and city work together.
Stay safe, stay informed — and keep me posted on how Detroit911 can serve you better.
